Badgers - Year 6
Welcome to Year 6 and a brand new autumn term.
This year, the class will predominately be taught by myself, Mrs Taylor and our class TA, Miss Haynes, who will be covering the class on Thursday and Fridays afternoons.
Our first topic this half term is the Anglo-Saxons, where the children will learn about their settlement in Britain and their way of life. Alongside this, we will be building our own Anglo-Saxon huts using a rang of materials to design, create and evaluate with. We will also be taking this opportunity to read Beowulf as part of our writing sessions as we study what makes fantasy fiction. This topic will be followed by the Vikings in autumn two, where we will learn about Alfred the Great, the Normandy Conquest and the Battle of Hastings. Alongside this topic we will be reading Viking Boy, where we will be looking at persuasive texts.
Over the term we will be developing our knowledge of place value in maths, as well as using the four operations to solve a variety of problems. Later on in the term we will be learning how to use the four operations with fractions before we end the year studying positioning and direction. In science we will be learning about light and electricity which will be taught by Miss Haynes, along with French, RE and PE. We are very lucky to be continuing with our PE sessions from Mr Stevens from Premier Sport.
Homework will be set every Friday and will be collected on Thursdays at the latest. It will consist of weekly spellings, maths and either a SPaG or comprehension piece. A half termly project may be set too along side our topics. Every Monday lunchtime I will be running a homework club which all the children have the option to attend if they wish. Additionally, they will also be able to use the time to do some quiet reading or practice their Time Table Rock Stars.
Within the first few weeks of term, the class will sit a set of past SAT paper for my own assessment and to allow the children to understand what the papers look like and prepare for May 2020. I will be using these assessments to orangise booster sessions and intervention schemes for selected children. Booster groups will be running before school and throughout the school day with the support of Mrs Oldroyd.
If you have anything you would like to discuss with me, then please feel free to speak to me directly at the beginning or the end of the school day. Alternately you can email me at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you for taking the time to read our Year 6 page and for all your continued support this year; it is very much appreciated.
